Designing a Montessori Playroom
I focused on simplicity, order, and accessibility when designing our playroom:
- Simplicity: Minimalistic furnishings and an uncluttered layout prevent sensory overload.
- Orderliness: Each item has its place, promoting organization and easy access.
- Accessibility: Low shelves and open storage empower children to select and engage with toys independently.
We designated a specific area in our home for Rumi’s playroom, incorporating these elements.
The shelf, strategically placed within her reach, encourages autonomy in selecting toys. We repurposed a bookshelf to save costs, opting for open shelves for flexibility.
We added a soft mat which provides a safe and comfortable surface for play, and natural materials like wooden toys create a sensory-rich environment.
I laid the mirror horizontally so Rumi can look at herself, further enhancing her exploration and self-discovery.
Choosing Developmentally-Appropriate Toys and Materials
Selecting toys and materials that align with Montessori principles is essential for supporting our child’s skill development.
Montessori philosophy emphasizes the use of materials that promote hands-on learning, critical thinking, and independence.
Open-ended toys are particularly valued, as they offer endless possibilities for imaginative play and problem-solving.

Implementing a Floor Bed
